Best 10 things to do in Rome
Best 10 things to do in Rome
–
Oh Rome, oh Rome! Our favorite city in Europe. Everywhere you look buildings are beautiful. And there is so much to see in this beautiful city! From the big Colosseum, actually it is one of the 7 Wonders of the World, to the incredible Roman Forum and Pantheon. You can spend here 3 days or 2 weeks and you will not get bored!
1. The beautiful Pantheon
The Pantheon is my favorite building in Rome because of its symmetry. At the day the square in front of the Pantheon is very touristic, it is one of the main crossroads in the city and many people take a break at one of the surrounding restaurants and cafés. Be here for sunrise, and you will have the Pantheon almost for yourself! Look at these beautiful letters on the cornice. Also you have to take pictures from the cute little fountain!! Surprisingly the inside of the Pantheon is free to visit during the day.
2. Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is not far away from the Pantheon. Be there early in the morning, there are so so many people at noon! Throw a coin in the water, people say it brings good luck. From every angle this fountain is beautiful. The water is so loud here.
3. Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine
The Colosseum is so impressing! It is one of the 7 world wonders for a reason! From one side you can see 4 levels, from the backside 3 levels, the 4th one is destroyed. You will have the most beautiful light at sunset. From the road Piazza del Colosseo walk the steps up to the wall, you can’t miss this place! Afterwards, walk around the Colosseum to the back. Come back in the night to see the Colosseum illuminated under the stars!
Also visit the Arch of Constantine! We highly recommend to visit the Colosseum from the inside! You can buy a combined ticket for the Colosseum and the Roman Forum directly next to the Colosseum at the office for 16€. You can also buy the tickets online. Don’t get fooled by the annoying sellers on site, who try to tell you, you can only buy a ticket from them. You can walk through the Colosseum on your own, or you get an audio guide.
4. Roman Forum and Palantine Hill
You should definitely walk through the big big area of Roman Forum and Palantine Hill! The old buildings are incredible and the view from above is breathtaking! There are several trails on different levels. There are water sources with drinking water.
5. Altare della Patria
If you walk to the Pantheon you can’t overlook Altare della Patria at the crossroad. This building is so big!! Take the steps upstairs and walk through the arcade.
6. Vatikan City : St. Peters Basilica, Saint Peters Square & Sistine Chapel
If you are in Rome you should definitely visit Vatikan City in the early morning when there are less tourists. In front of Saint Peters Square you have to pass a few security checks. Then you can walk around the whole area of the square and the basilica. Also take some pictures at the big pillars framing the St. Peters Basilica. Visit the St. Peters Basilica from the inside, it’s actually free! For going up on the tower, you have to 10€ for the elevator or 8€ for the steps. Only cash is possible. For the Sistine Chapel you need an extra ticket.
7. Castel San Angelo
Have a walk at the river Tiber until you reach Castel San Angelo and the famous bridge with all the angels. Same as the other places, there are lots of tourists at noon, be here early!
8. Piazza del Popolo
I love this piazza! It looks like this square is mirrored at the triumphal column, the buildings on the left and on the right look totally similar! If you drive or walk through the city gate you can choose in which of the 5 axis you want to walk. Have a look at the details of the triumphal column.
9. Villa Borghese
This park is perfect for a Sunday walk. A lot of people are doing sports and a lot of kids learn inline skating here. You can actually spot some canaries here! From the park you have the perfect view of Piazza del Popolo.
10. Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are really close to Villa Borghese. Walk all the steps up to have the perfect view of the city!
Eat At
Restaurant Origano Campo de’ Fiori:
They have a lot of vegetarian and vegan dishes here and the vegan pasta tasted incredible!!
Restaurant Buddy:
They have an organic, vegetarian and vegan cuisine. The sitting area outside is perfect to have a break.
Gelateria Della Palma:
This gelateria is really famous because of 150 different ice flavors they sell. They also have 10 vegan ice flavors.
Stay at
We stayed at Charme Spagna Boutique Hotel directly in the city center! The hotel is only 10 minutes away from Trevi Fountain. You will sleep in an old building with high walls. They also have a 24 hour reception.
How to get around?
I recommend to leave your car outside the city, because it’s really expensive to park your car and there are a lot of limited streets, where you are not allowed to drive as a tourist. Actually you don’t need a car in Rome! From the airport you can take the Leonardo Express to Termini train station for 14€ per person. It takes 30 minutes. For 8 € you can take the normal train, but it takes you 1 hour to get to the city center.
In the center you just have to walk a lot, to really soak in the Rome vibes. But if you want to get faster from one place to the other the city scooters are perfect! For 12 – 16€ depending on the provider, you can buy a day pass and drive as much as you want with breaks in between.
