3 – Day Bangkok Route Guide – The Best 15 Things To Do

Bangkok, this huge, crazy and overwhelming city and still one of the most interesting cities in the world. Most people either love or hate Bangkok. We promise you will fall in love with this city when you visit the uncrowded, unseen and less known places! With our 3-day Bangkok route guide, we want to help you to spend 3 wonderful days in Bangkok and to experience the real city vibe!

Day 1

1. Visit your first temple the Marble Palace – Wat Benchamabophit in the early morning

Wake up early in the morning and you will have this temple all for yourself! Buy a BTS card for the sky train and leave it at the nearest station. Then take a Grab for the last meters. The Skytrain is actually a lot faster than the cars on the congested roads. The temple officially opens at 8 am but they will also let you in at 7 am! Make sure to come very early to not get into the crowds. This temple is located a bit outside the center, it is still a little secret temple. For us, it was the most beautiful temple in Bangkok!

Look at those beautiful colors of this temple. We loved all the golden details together with the white Italian marble. The symmetry of this temple is stunning and there are many great photo locations! The entry fee is 50 THB (1,57$) and you have to cover your knees and shoulders.

2. Time for breakfast: The “Another Cup” Café

Exhausted from taking a lot of pictures? Now it is time for some relaxing moments with a wonderful and healthy breakfast. Another Cup is located directly in the city and it is a very popular and modern café. We are still dreaming of the acai bowl, avocado toast and wraps we ate there. Be prepared to have a little small talk with some locals or other tourists.

3. Bike tour away from the crowds: Bike through Bangkok with Co van Kessel

There are so many crowded and touristic areas in Bangkok. But you want to see the real Bangkok life right? This bike tour is perfect to experience Bangkok away from the crowds! The Netherland bike company offers short 3-hour bike tours and long 5-hour bike tours. We had a 5-hour bike tour at 2 pm, no worries there are a lot of breaks in between!

At first we drove through the small narrow streets of China Town. We circled through a labyrinth of food stalls and locals. We were impressed and shocked at the same time about the poor living conditions. Then we reached a big street with lots of backlit panels, like in New York.

After visiting a little unknown Chinese temple, we took the longtail boat and passed some very poor shoreline with metal huts directly next to bigger homes. Some locals were selling products on their little boats. We stopped at another temple, where the people shook sticks for their horoscopes. We then rode the bike over small wooden walkways and found ourselves in green nature outside the center. We stopped at some rails with waving kids, they all wanted to give a high five! In the end we had some nice plant based food at a small local restaurtant.

4. Visit a legendary street market in the evening: Rot Fai Nightmarket

You have to visit one of the famous night markets with tons of street food! The most popular market amongst locals is the Rod Fai Nightmarket outside the city and the touristic area. Originally it was a big train market.
On this trendy open-air market, you will find trendy clothing, souvenir, furniture and oldtimers next to hundreds of food stalls. There will be mostly locals! Walk until you reach the end of the streets and you will see the light chains.
Search for Rot Fai Market at Srinakarin Soi 51. You have to take a Grab to get there. It is open from Thursday to Sunday from 5 to 12 pm. There is a smaller Rod Fai market in the city, but the bigger one outside the city offers a better experience!

Day 2

5. Time for more temples: Wat Arun

First of all, the earlier you reach the temple, the less tourist groups will be around you. Take the Skytrain to the nearest Skytrain station like National Stadium. From there grab a taxi to the ferry terminal “Tha Tien”. The temple is located at the other side of the river and the short ferry ride will cost you 4 Baht (0,13$) per person. The entry fee for the white temple will be 50 THB (1,57$) and it opens at 8 am.

Wat Arun is a beautiful completely white temple with colorful details built in many layers. It is located directly next to the river and offers a great view! The symmetry is beautiful and you can walk up on several sides.

6. A second beautiful temple: Wat Pho

From Wat Arun take the ferry back to the other side and walk to the second temple Wat Pho. It is a big temple complex and costs 100 Baht (3,14$) per person. In one temple, there is a huge lying golden Buddha. The little pagodas looked incredibly beautiful!

7. Time for a wonderful breakfast: “Patom Organic Living”

The Pantom Organic Living Café is a very special and beautiful place like a nature oasis in Bangkok. Although you will find the upper class of Bangkok citizens in this area, it is very interesting to learn about the difference between the poor and rich areas of the city. Pantom Organic Living Café offers a beautiful variety of organic food in a wonderful wooden pavilion. They support local farmers to 100%.

8. Visit one of the big Shopping Malls: Terminal 21

Bangkok is famous for the amount of big shopping malls. We highly recommend Terminal 21, because it is located directly at the BTS and it offers some nice individual and small design stalls on the upper levels. Just walk through the labyrinth of small stores. Of course there is a big food court at several levels as well!

9. The perfect sunset on a rooftop bar: Octave Rooftop Bar – Marriot Hotel

Take the Skytrain to the Octave Rooftop Bar of the Marriot hotel for sunset. On level 47 there is a wonderful rooftop terrace. You don´t have to stay in the hotel or to pay an entry fee, just get a drink and everything will be relaxed and perfect. Look at the crazy city life of Bangkok and wait for the sun getting down behind the skyline. From there you even see the river and the area behind it.

Day 3

10. Look at the sunset from a longtail boat or visit Wat Phra

On our trip, we mostly choose the uncrowded places, the better experience of Bangkok. However, if you like to see the famous Wat Phra and the Grand Palace you should go there very early in the morning! If you want to enjoy a relaxed sunrise instead, take the ferry over the river and watch the sun rising behind the skyscrapers. Co van Kessel offers a longtail boat tour from the Chao Phraya River to Thonburi. But there are also many ferry terminals along the river which are almost free, you can start at the ferry terminal Tha Tien!

11. Time for a slow breakfast: Brekkie Café

The Brekkie Café was one of the most modern and clean cafés we found in Bangkok! It is definitely worth a visit, although it is more pricy than grabbing some street food. We ate 3 (!) amazing bowls like a peanut-cashew-banana bowl, sweet potato, and some tea. It has an open kitchen with lots of fruits and offers tables at 3 levels. A bowl will cost around 230 Baht (7,20$). Directly next to Brekkie you will find an organic food store.

12. Take a Tuk Tuk

Time for a legendary tuk-tuk ride through Bangkok. You should definitely choose a short distance to try a tuk-tuk ride because the traffic is really dirty. Take a tuk-tuk to the entry of the Rambuttri Alley. You have to bargain for the price. Normally you can start with half of the price the driver told you.

13. Walk through the vibrant Rambuttri Alley and Khao San Road

Both streets are popular places directly next to each other. Walk down the Rambuttri Alley and have a look at the street food stalls, restaurants and bars, then walk back the Khao San Road with a lot more restaurants and bars ;). Especially in the evening it gets very vibrant here.

14. Some relaxing time in the Lumphini Park

Do you need some relaxing time after visiting the touristic temples and the vibrant Rambuttri Alley? Then you will be surprised by this relaxed piece of nature in the middle of the city. Get some picknick food and take a Grab to the National Stadium, then take the Skytrain to the Si Lom station / Lumphini Park. Walk under the green palm trees and around the beautiful lake while having the best view on the skyline!

15. Try some local food and enjoy the last sunset

After this exciting day, you should watch the sunset going down behind the water and grab some local food. Walk through the vibrant streets of Sukhumvit and soak in the Bangkok vibes for the last time! Especially the smells kept in our mind.

How to get away from the Airports

If you are coming to Bangkok from an international destination you will arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The fastest way to get to the center is by taking the direct sky train BTS. If you are coming from a national airport like Surat Thani (like us) you will arrive at Donmuang Airport. There is no sky train, but the app “Grab” works perfectly for Bangkok. Just type in your location and your destination and the app will show you the costs and your driver. We even got a female taxi driver.

Buy a SIM Card and get some THB

First things first, we always buy a SIM card directly at the airport. It is a lot easier to search where you want to go or to use the apps to order a taxi. Then get some Thai Baht with your credit card at an ATM, writing this article 100 Baht is equal to 3,1 US-Dollar.

How to get around in the city

We highly recommend taking the BTS as much as you can! The Skytrain is the fastest way to get around in the city and you never have to wait long for the train. For a 10-minute train ride, you could easily need 1 hour with the car on the crowded streets. Buy a rabbit card and charge it with some money, then you only have to tap it on the gate. For the underground train, you have to buy a chip.

In the city center there is no BTS available, take the Skytrain to the last station and get a taxi with the app Grab. It works perfectly in Bangkok and the app shows you what you have to pay. Another wonderful way to get around is by ferries, they are very cheap and offer the best view!

Where to stay in Bangkok

There are so many beautiful hotels in Bangkok and the best thing is, they mostly cost under 100 Dollar. We tried a new, just opened hotel “Glow Sukhumvit 5” and we were very happy with it! We had to pay like 70 Dollar per night and the rooms were so comfy! When you choose a hotel it is very important that it´s near to the BTS station, also we highly recommend staying in the friendly Sukhumvit area (it is on of the best districts to stay at). From this hotel, it´s less than 10 minutes to the next BTS.

We really hope you enjoy your time in Bangkok. If you have any questions or if you need any help, write us in the comments below.
