Yoga at Talalla Retreat, Dickwella & Hiriketiya Beach

Yoga at Talalla Retreat, Dickwella & Hiriketiya Beach

Do you look for a wonderful place on the South Coast? Empty, chilled beaches, wellness, surfing all day and yoga in the morning? Well, this one will be perfect for you: When we reached the South Coast, we first stayed at a wonderful yoga, surfing and wellness retreat, located directly in front of Talalla Beach.

Beginning and ending the day with yoga and watching the sunsets at the beach is the perfect way to relax after exploring the mainland. The area around Talalla is amazing and the beaches are less crowded and very beautiful! Make sure to visit the first swing in Dickwella and the chilled Hiriketiya Beach by taking a tuk-tuk.

1. The Talalla Retreat – A Relaxing Paradise

The Talalla Retreat is a huge area located directly in front of the Talalla Beach. Just walk from your beach villa or room down the garden area, swing in the hammocks, read some books or directly jump into the ocean. At sunrise and sunset you will meet nice fishermen getting their beautiful colored boats in.

The Retreat has a big wooden dining pavilion, a lot of beautiful beach huts and villas, as well as four yoga shalas and a huge pool. They are also offering some nice wellness treatments. If you like to leave the retreat and to explore the surroundings, although you could probably spend 1 week in the retreat, tuk-tuk´s will wait at the entrance to drive you everywhere.

2. Yoga Classes – Talalla Retreat

Although you can also stay here without doing a yoga class, we highly recommend to try it. The Yoga Shalas are very beautiful, one Shala is even located directly at the beach. The yoga teachers are very nice and did an amazing job!

We tried a few different yoga classes and one pilates class. You will get a schedule plan with all the different classes for the week and you choose between them. To wake up with practicing some yoga vinyasa in the sunrise or to end the day with a pilates class is a wonderful way to appreciate the moment and to focus on yourself.

3. Get to see a sunset and sunrise!

Make sure to see a sunrise or sunset on the beach! They are the best in Sri Lanka! The light is red and golden, the fishermen get their boats out of the water, and in the evening an incredible stillness spreads over the bay, before the setting sun disappears with a red ball into the sea.

4. Surfing at Hiriketiya Beach

Are you ready to explore some of the surrounding beaches? Take a tuk-tuk at the entrance of Talalla Retreat and bargain, you can look at the pick me app for a fair price. We highly recommend Hiriketiya Beach, called Hiri, for chill-time in some nice bars and for surfing. There are several places to rent a surf board along the beach. It is usually about 300 LKR per hour (1,70$). The waves are coming in perfectly for beginners, that´s why Hiriketiya is getting more famous.

In the evening a chilled beach vibe is going on. Some bars have live music in the evening. You should hang out at Dots Beach House.

5. Swing at Dikwella Beach

Dikwella is getting more famous because of its number of high-class wellness retreats, restaurants and hotels. You can easily get there with a tuk-tuk and explore the beaches by foot. There are long empty beaches, but probably the best thing are the swings. You will find several swings along the South Coast, but in Dikwella you will find the first one.

One swing is located at the Mahi Mahi restaurant in the bay directly next to Dikwella Beach (the swing you see on the pictures). Actually, there was a second higher swing on the beach next to Dickwella Beach Resort and Spa, but sadly we found the palm tree lying on the ground. You might also see some kids climbing the palm trees near the Resort. Get there for sunset to catch the best light!

6. Alternative Yoga Shala Salt House

If you haven´t the possibility to stay in a yoga retreat or hotel, there are other wonderful places to do some yoga practice! Salt House is a yoga place located in the middle of the jungle in Dikwella. The building is very beautiful and you will immediately feel the relaxed yoga vibes there. They also offer very good vegan food!!

7. Time left? Visit Dondra Lighthouse or the blowhole

Do you have more time left in this area? Then you can visit Dondra Lighthouse. It is the Southernmost point of Sri Lanka and you will find a white building in the middle of palm trees. You can also visit Hummanaya blowhole. Sometimes the water splashes out over 30 meters in the air between the rocks.

8. Celebrating New Year at the beach and the next bigger town Matara

We celebrated New Year´s Eve at the Talalla Retreat and watched the fireworks at the beach. It was a wonderful experience and we highly recommend this place for celebrating! Talalla Retreat prepared a big dinner with many vegan options and prepared some Sri Lankan dance-shows. At midnight many fire-work-rockets and bangers light up the dark sky and the people stood together around a fire!

We also stayed in Matara, it isn´t a must-see tourist attraction, we found mostly locals in this area. But if you need to buy something special – this is the place.

How to get around?

From Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park you can hire a taxi to Talalla Beach. Ask at your hotel or have a look in the app pick me. From Mirissa you can even take a tuk-tuk to get there. For visiting Dikwella, Hiriketiya, Salt House or Dondra we highly recommend taking a tuk-tuk – but don´t forget to bargain!
