15 Best Things To Do In RHODES – GREECE

15 Best Things To Do In RHODES – GREECE

Greece – the paradise of clear and blue water! A destination we underestimated for a long time. Rhodes is one of the warmest Greek islands due to the closeness to Turkey. Even in October, we had very warm water and weather. You want to improve your underwater or snorkel pictures? Than Rhodes is the right location for you! The East Coast is full of amazing, calm and protected snorkel bays and caves, while the South and West Coast offer the perfect conditions for surfers.

But there is a lot more to discover – ready to explore white houses in Lindos, the Akropolis and amazing secret spots on a road trip through Rhodes? We want to show you the hidden and uncrowded areas of this island!

1. The amazing Kallithea Springs

When we arrived at the airport in the North-West of the island we got our car and drove straight to Kallithea Springs. We were totally surprised by the beautiful meager landscape we passed and by the blue water we found there! At first, we were sitting under some straw parasols on the beach next to the entrance of Kallithea Springs. We even saw the rocks 10 meters underwater, the water was so clear!

Then we entered Kallithea Springs, they are known since antiquity for their thermal springs. Utilized by the Italians in the early 20th century, it got very popular and attracting for people all over the world. Since today it is used as a bathing place with a bar and beautiful straw parasols.
Do you see the beautiful stars at the ceiling? The white buildings are an amazing photo spot! From the highest building, you have a wonderful view of the ocean and the blue water.

2. Some chill time at Oasis Beach

We found this hidden bay and we immediately fell in love with this chilled place. There weren´t many people, but a little bar in the caves and the bluest water you can imagine. The diving and snorkeling pictures turned out amazing and it was a lot of fun to dive between the big rocks underwater.

3. Snorkeling at Anthony Quinn Bay and Ladiko Beach

These two beaches might be one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. You will reach Ladiko Beach first, Anthony Quinn Bay is located at a dead end but it´s totally worth it to drive until the end! Anthony Quinn Bay had the most turquoise water we saw on Rhodes! You can park your car for free and hike up a little mountain. From there you litterly see every rock in the water! People were laying everywhere around the little bay, many people snorkeled and we even found some corals! Surrounded by families and little snorkel boats we had a wonderful time!

4. Traganou Cave and Afandou Beach

Afandou beach is a long sandy bay with very clear blue water! You can walk or swim up to the North of this Bay and you will find the beautiful Traganou Cave. It is easy to swim to the cave, and there weren´t many people at all. This place really felt like a little secret spot! The water was so clear we saw several little fish swarms around us and you could see 20 meters to the ground.

5. Casa Cook Hotel – Where to stay

Casa Cook was our favorite place to stay overnight and to eat a nice meal at the chilled pool bar. The buildings and the pool looked very stylish and naturally designed. From the pool, you have the best view on the mountains and the hotel is located in the middle of all the amazing snorkel beaches on the East Coast.

6. Explore Lindos Akropolis

The Akropolis in Lindos was one of our favorite moments in Greece! The first time, we tried to go there for sunset but they had already closed. They open the gate from 8 am to 5:30 pm. The second time we´ve been there at 7:45 am in the morning and they already let us in. We had the place for ourselves until 9:30 am and enjoyed the incredible morning sun. Fantastic! The old temples are located on the top of the Lindos mountain with a wonderful view of the ocean! A few parts of the buildings are old and a few are restored. We could see the popular little bay between the rocks from there and we were very impressed by walking under the big pillars. What a magical place!! The entry fee is 12€ (13,5$) per person. It was allowed to fly the drone!

7. Beautiful Lindos Town – experience a sunrise and sunset there!

We were already impressed by the Akropolis on the mountain in Lindos, but this little town got our hearts. The white houses are terraced in the rocks and they form amazing cooling alleys on warm days cast by the houses. The little shops, bars and restaurants were so cute!
Our favorite restaurant was Cesar´s Meze Bar, from the rooftop terrace we had a wonderful view of the white buildings! Be there for sunrise and watch the sun setting down behind the mountains while having an amazing dinner with different hummus cremes, bread, risotto, pistachios…. It is a bit more pricey at this restaurant but totally worth it! In the darkness the town most of the white houses are lightened and the vibes felt amazing there!

8. Best Sunset Spot – Secret Place next to chapel

We found this cute place accidentally when we searched for a place to watch the sun going down. From Lindos, you head down the road to the South, after a few minutes there is a little mountain pass and a mountain with a little chapel called Prophet Elias Church to the left. Walk up the stairs and ring the bell in front of the chapel.
From here you can see the sun going down behind the blue water. The view over the hilly island was fantastic as well!

9. Hidden Saint Paul´s Beach at the foot of Lindos

After exploring Lindos you can walk by foot down to the food of the town, passing the theater, until you reach Saint Paul´s beach. You can also park at the nearest parking space for 5€ (5,62$) the day, further up it´s free.
The water was so clear and there was only a little beach with only a few people. The best thing about this place was jumping into the water from the cliffs and diving between a split in the water!

10. Snorkel at the hidden Kavos Beach with the clearest water

Kavos Beach was one of our favorite beaches on the island, because there weren´t many people. Due to the protected bay, we found the clearest water of the island on this hidden and unknown beach. We first came for some drone shots but returned later to take some diving and snorkel pictures with our GoPro. Surrounded by the mountains and the clearest water it was a paradise for us.

Photo tip: If you haven´t a cameraman like us, you can fix the GoPro at the rope of a buoy in the water. Weight down the camera with a sock full of sand and set it on self-timer and interval shooting. The only difficulty is to get the right moment on the picture ;).

There are many more beautiful sand beaches above and under Kavos beach, like the bigger Pefki Beach or Glystra Beach. We had an amazing sunset there, but it was more crowded than Kavos Beach.

11. Prasonisi – Surfers Paradise

Now it´s time to explore the South coast of the island. Heading down the road from the protected snorkel bays, the beaches get wavier and more windy. You will pass bigger hotels and a richer area of Rhodes in a flat landscape. Turn left and take the street to Prasonisi. You have to drive up a little mountain pass through dry landscape. It was very windy and we saw lots of surfers in the big waves. Afterwards, you can explore the mountains with your car. Then take the road to the West coast.

12. The remote West Coast – more windy and wavier

Exploring the West Coast with our car felt more like an adventure. You can´t snorkel at the beaches on the West Coast because of the high waves. For snorkeling, you have to go to the East Coast. However the water was extremely blue, there were less tourists and more of a road trip feeling.

13. The inner island – explore mountains and deserts

From the West Coast head to the inner island. The streets from the West Coast up to the North are very mountainous and remote, but an adventure for sure. We passed the biggest mountain Atavyros with 1200 meters and drove some serpentines between dry landscape and lots of olive trees. We saw no single tourist, only a few locals in the villages and some coats. In Appolakia we took the road back to Lindos. At half of the way, there was a beautiful mountain street and a great photo location. Jump out of your car and take some amazing shots!

14. Rodos Town – The North : The best bakery!!

Now we explore the North of the island. The biggest town of the island is also called Rodos. We head there early in the morning, for visiting the Akropolis at sunrise. Unfortunately, the sun was hidden by the clouds and there were framework around the Akropolis. After walking through a racecourse for horses next to it, we drove with our car to the harbour of Rodos.

You can park your car near the Street of the Knights at the water for 5€ per 3 hours. Rodos is very touristic and we needed only 3 hours until we wanted to return to some hidden beaches on the East Coast.
However, it was interesting to see the Palace of the Grand Master, the Church of the Virgins and the Mosque de Mustave.
Secret tip: The little bakery called Fournariko Bakery!! It´s such a cute place and they offer incredible meals and bread!!

15. Our second hotel in Lindos

Lindos is for sure the most beautiful town on the island! The beautiful Casa Cook Hotel is located further up on the coast near Tsambika and you might want to have another hotel in beautiful Lindos. We stayed at the Lindos Village Resort and Spa and the white houses on different levels were amazing. From the main house and the little valleys between the buildings you have a great view on the ocean. There was a cute little blue and white chapel and Lindos city was only a 5-minute car ride.

Where to eat?

Well, everywhere you can buy olives, bread and of course Tsaziki and Feta…For a plant-based diet, it wasn´t that easy. But we found some amazing spots with good plant-based options:

Cesar´s Meze Bar in Lindos (amazing food, best rooftop terrace)
Casa Cook Hotel near Tsambika (tasty food with many plant-based options)
Fournariko Bakery in Rodes!! (Secret tip!! Fantastic!)

How to get there?

We highly recommend renting a car. We booked our car with Car del Mar. From the airport, you need around 20 minutes to get to Kallithea Springs on the East Coast.
Drones are allowed everywhere on the island. The life on Rhodes is slower, don´t be surprised when you are the only one at the beach at 9 am.

How long and when should we go there? Temperatures?

On our four days on the island we had enough time to explore most areas and we could spend many hours snorkeling on the beautiful beaches. If you have more time, we would recommend to explore another Greek island. We’ve been there in the middle of October and had temperatures of 26-28 degrees (felt a lot warmer in the sun) and water temperatures of 25 degrees.
